In an ideal world, we would all wake up in the morning, fresh and ready to face the day, head downstairs, switch on our laptops, and get started with our work.

As anyone who has ever encountered any type of technology will be aware, however, life is very rarely that simple.

If you own a laptop, the chances are almost certain that at some point, it will go wrong.

Hopefully, this is something that can be resolved quickly and easily – unlike spilling your entire cup of morning coffee on the motherboard – and having the knowledge and skills to fix this as painlessly as possible is essential.

With that in mind, we will take a look at the best way to reset your Gateway laptop without having to turn it on, and let you get on with your tasks in no time.

Why Reset Your Laptop?

Before we go into the step-by-step guide, it is useful to consider the benefits of resetting your laptop.

As well as helping to eliminate any viruses or potential dangers to your laptop, a reset is also an option if you find that your device is slow, bloated, or taking a long time to load.

When resetting your laptop, it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of just what the System Restore function does.

In the simplest terms, this rolls the settings, drivers, and programs of your systems back to an earlier date – that is, a date when your laptop was running smoothly.

Documents and data will remain unaffected, but any new programs added after the restore point will be removed. If you are struggling with your computer, this should be your first step, as it does not require backing up any data.

How To Perform A System Restore

Start by rebooting your laptop, and holding down the F8 key as soon as your system starts.

The “Advanced Boot Options” menu will appear, and you should select “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” from the list.

Next, you will be taken to the command prompt, and you will need to open the System Restore utility – for Windows 7,8 and Vista, type “rstui.exe”, for Windows XP, type “%systemroot%system32restorerstrui.exe”. When you have typed your command, press the Enter key.

A list of available restore points will then be displayed – each will have a time, date, and brief explanation of why it was created.

Select your desired restore point, and then click “Next”. Wait for the restore process to complete, and then allow your computer to reboot – this may take a few moments.

Once the system is restored, you can reinstall all your programs – just be aware that one of those may have caused the issues that required you to reboot.

In some cases, you may struggle to access the “Advanced Boot Options” menu, especially if your laptop boots very quickly.

If this is the case, you will need to enter the menu while the laptop is on – click “Settings”, go to “Power”, and then hold the Shift key and click “Reset” – your laptop will then enter the menu.

You may also find that you do not have a suitable restore point – in this case, you will need to totally reset the laptop to factory settings.

How To Reset To Factory Settings

Resetting to factory settings may sound a little overwhelming, but it can be a useful way to remove any potential problems and literally start with a clean slate.

Before you do anything, make sure you have backed up your data and any files. Make sure that your laptop is plugged in before you get started to ensure that you have plenty of power.

To get started, reboot your computer, and press Alt and F10 at the same time as soon as you see the Gateway logo, in order to load the Recovery Manager.

When you are in, select the “Restore Operating System to Factory Defaults” option, and confirm that you wish to proceed. Once you have started the restore, all data on your disk will be deleted, Windows will be reinstalled, and any programs that came with your laptop – this can take up to an hour to complete.

Once the reset has been completed, your laptop will look and act as if it is brand new, and you will need to create a new account and configure your settings.

In some cases, you may not be able to access the Recovery Manager – this may be the situation if you have installed a new hard drive or have previously formatted the hard drive.

Here, you will need to use a Windows installation or recovery disc to reset to factory settings. This will typically come with your laptop, but new copies can be ordered directly from Gateway.

If you do not have access to a recovery disc, or cannot source a replacement, you will need to either find or create an installation disc for Windows – make sure this is the same version that you are running.

Once you have the disc, reboot your computer, and press F12 repeatedly – this will open the Boot menu.

You can then instruct your laptop to boot from the disc drive before it boots from the hard drive, insert your installation disc or installation USB drive, save your settings, and reboot the computer.

When prompted, follow the instructions to enter the Recovery Manager or the Windows set up process – you can then set your language preferences and install the required material.

If you are prompted, select the option to begin a “Custom” installation – this allows you to check that everything has been deleted.

When instructed, remove all partitions, and allocate the single remaining section as the intended destination for your new installation. You can then wait for the installation to complete, enter the product key, and download the necessary drivers.

Final Thoughts

In the majority of cases, rebooting or resetting your Gateway laptop will be enough to get you back on track.

If this option fails to get things running smoothly again, it could be the case that there is an issue with your hardware, and you may have to do a little more digging in order to fix the problem and bring your device back to life.
