PDF Arranger, an application to manipulate PDF files, has been updated to version 1.5.0, getting a new user interface and various other improvements. Also, the application is now available as a flatpak package on Flathub.

PDF Arranger, which started as a fork of PDF Shuffler, is a GUI application that allows merging, splitting, rotating and cropping PDF documents. It can also be used to rearrange pages in PDF files, and edit some basic PDF metadata information, like the title, creator, producer and creator tool.

This Python3-GTK application is essentially a frontend for pikepdf, dropping support for PyPDF2 in recent releases. It’s available for Linux and Windows.

The latest PDF Arranger 1.5.0 comes with a new user interface which uses a header bar and symbolic icons. The new header bar has buttons for opening a PDF file, saving (and save as) the PDF, rotate left/right, and zoom, along with a menu button where you’ll find these, and other operations. There’s also a new item on the header bar that shows the total number of pages in the opened PDF file.

PDF Arranger 1.5.0 also comes with some new features. One of them is the ability to drag and drop PDF pages from one PDF Arranger instance to a different, empty instance, which can be useful to create a new PDF file from others by using drag and drop.

This release also adds support for merging double-sided scanned documents. This is useful in case you scan one side of all the pages of a document to a PDF, then scan the other side of the same pages to another PDF document – you can then merge them using PDF Arranger and have the pages properly ordered.

Yet another new addition to this release of the excellent PDF Arranger tool is cut / copy / paste actions. Thanks to this, you can now cut / copy selected PDF pages and easily paste them anywhere in the document (or in a new PDF Arranger instance, even if it’s empty).

PDF Arranger 1.5 also includes:

  • Preserve selection when dropping dragged pages
  • Improved cursor visibility and dnd drop reject
  • Drop support for pikepdf < 1.7.0 and Gtk < 3.12

What’s more, PDF Arranger is now (it has for about a week I believe) available to install from Flathub. This makes it easy to install across a large number of Linux distributions. For example, I can no longer update PDF Arranger in the Linux Uprising Apps PPA for Ubuntu versions older than 20.04, because it needs pikepdf 1.7.0 or newer, which is not available in older Ubuntu releases. But this is not an issue if you use the Flatpak package, so you can install PDF Arranger 1.5.0 no matter what Ubuntu version you’re using (and obviously, on other Linux distributions as well).

PDF Arranger is available for Linux and Windows.

The application is available in the repositories for many Linux distributions, including Arch Linux, Manjaro, Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora, and more. It has yet to be updated to the latest 1.5.0 version in most though (it was already updated in Arch Linux, Manjaro Unstable and Parabola).

You may install the latest version on many Linux distributions by using the PDF Arranger Flathub package. You’ll need to setup Flatpak and Flathub (one time process), then you can install PDF Arranger using:

flatpak install flathub com.github.jeromerobert.pdfarranger

I have also updated the Linux Uprising Apps PPA with PDF Arranger 1.5.0 for Ubuntu 20.04 (it depends on pikepdf 1.7.0 or newer, which is not available in older Ubuntu versions).
