SSH (Secure Shell) is a protocol designed to facilitate secure communications between systems in untrusted networks and over the internet. SSH works in a client-server architecture where users log in to servers remotely and securely. Unlike other remote communication protocols, such as Telnet, FTP, SSH encrypts the login session, rendering the connection difficult for intruders to collect unencrypted passwords.

For file transfers from one host to another through SSH protocol, scp program is available. By using secure methods for login and file transfers to remote systems, you decreases the risks for both the client system and the remote host. The client will always transmit the authentication information to the remote server using strong, 128-bit encryption.

As all the data sent and received during an SSH session are transferred using 128-bit encryption. It is almost impossible to intercept transmissions for any read and decrypt operations.

Mastering SSH takes time and experience. In this post I’ll recommend a book which can help new Linux users, and Windows users get started with OpenSSH. Know the tools available for both Windows and Linux, how configurations are done, and how to tune SSH server for tight security and optimal performance.
