Let’s create Obsidian blocks in a few ways, including an unlimited generator.
Obsidian has excellent blast resistance and many more utilities, including making Minecraft beacons, nether portals, enchanting tables, etc.
And since it’s such a premium item, why would it be easily available?
Naturally, it spawns in the Nether, the End, and the Overworld. In a nutshell, I would suggest creating it as it’s much easier with minimum fuss.
Making Obsidian in Minecraft
You need a block of water and ‘X’ blocks of lava. Here, ‘X’ is the number of Obsidian blocks you want to create.
However, one can also create an Obsidian farm with a staircase, one water block, and two lava blocks if tweaking with game rules is a viable option.
And the third method is about Obsidian farming without any game rule modification.

Like anything you do in Minecraft, you need crafting, which will be discussed at last for everything mentioned in this guide.
Using Lava and Water Blocks
This is one of the simplest methods to get a few obsidian blocks.
Here, each lava contacting flowing water will turn into Obsidian. Consequently, one water block is all you want. But for lava, the number of source blocks equals the obsidian output you desire.
Therefore, it’s best to find a naturally occurring lava lake. Afterward, pour the water on a high point and let it flow over the lake.
But if you want even more Obsidian, keep a few empty buckets ready and fill them for as many Obsidian blocks as you want.
This is more of my personal experience, and it’s nowhere mentioned that lava lakes are an infinite source.
Obsidian Farm
Making a renewable Obsidian resource can be done in two ways: by changing a game rule and without it. And, of course, the prior is easier of the two. Regardless, we’ll discuss both of them.
Method 1: With Gamerule
First, you have to set /gamerule LavaSourceConversion to true.
And as already stated, you’ll need a staircase, two lava, and water. Afterward, you can make a simple arrangement, as shown below, for a renewable Obsidian generator.
This is the fastest method. However, move to the next one if you don’t want to or can’t change the game rules.
Method 2: Without Gamerule Tweaks
This farm will give you lava which you can use further with the flowing water to get Obsidian.
The minimum you’ll need is one of each:
- Cauldron
- Pointed dripstone
- Lava
Each of these is pretty easy to find, including pointed dripstone found in dripstone caves or standard ones.
However, the major issue with such a farm is the time it takes to regenerate lava once you empty it.
Consequently, it needs to be built at scale, matching the expected demand.

Put simply; you need lots of lava and a single bucket of water. Besides, Obsidian farming is fun, and the game rule thing makes it really effortless.
