Well, no more! Today we are here to tell you how you can turn on your laptop without using a power button! Keep reading to find out all you need to know about turning your laptop on in different ways!

What Is A Power Button?

Before we get into it, let’s have a quick recap for those in the room that need it! A power button is a small button located in the top corner, usually on your laptop’s keyboard.

The button will have a power sign on it, which is a circle with a vertical line in the top center.

If you aren’t sure where your power button is located, be sure to check out the diagram of your laptop in your user manual or look for some online tutorials. Pressing the power button allows you to turn the laptop on and off.

It’s often how you start a manual restart, too, having to hold the button down until the laptop turns off and pressing again to restart the device.

The power button is the quickest and easiest way to turn your laptop on, but if this starts to fail, you will want to consider other methods. We have two methods that you can use if you notice your power button starts to fail.

We recommend having these methods in place so that you aren’t left scrambling should your power button stop working!

Now that we have covered what your power button is, let’s move on to look at how you can turn your laptop on without one!

How To Turn On A Laptop Without A Power Button?

Let’s get into it! We have two options for powering your laptop without a power button. We will walk you through these now, but remember some steps might be different depending on the laptop and software.

If you find yourself struggling, be sure to contact the manufacturer of your laptop’s customer support for more tailored advice.

Using An External Keyboard

The first option you have is to use an external keyboard to turn your laptop on and off. This method works best as a preventative measure, done before your power button develops faults.

Let’s take a look at how this works.

Step 1 – Access BIOS Settings

There are two different ways you can access your BIOS settings. The first is to press F2 when your laptop is starting up or the DEL key, and this method works best if your laptop is turning on rather than up and running.

Alternatively, you can access these settings if your laptop is turned on. From the start menu, access your settings and look for the update & security option.

The names of these might vary depending on the software on your laptop. Next, you will want to select recovery, which will open a tab with two sections.

Under advanced setup, select restart now, which will trigger a new window to pop up. Run through your options and select troubleshooting. From there, you will want to select the advanced options.

Step 2 – Power Management

Once you are in the BIOS settings, you will want to hit the power management or ACPI management tab. Once selected, press enter.

Step 3 – Check Your Settings

Next, look for the power on by keyboard or wake on the keyboard setting, and it might have a similar name rather than that exact wording. Once located, use the plus or minus key to enable the option.

Step 5 – Select Your Key

Next, choose the key that you wish to use as your power button. Once selected, save and then exit using the F10 key. Once done, you will want to test to see if it works.

Step 6 – Test The Key

To check that it works, turn your laptop off. Once it’s shut down, press the key you have selected to power it on. If the laptop turns on, then it has worked. If not, you might need to restart your laptop and run through the process again.

Using Wake-On LAN

Another option is to use a keyboard to turn on your laptop. This method is suitable for those with Windows 10 running on their laptops. Just like the above method, you will need to access the BIOS system.

Step 1 – Access The BIOS

To start, use the first step from the earlier method to access the BIOS. The method is the same up until step 2, so once your BIOS is up, come back down to join us!

Step 2 – Access Power Management

Next, you will want to locate the power management or ACPI management tab. Once located, press enter.

Step 3 – Find The Setting

Scroll until you see the setting power on LAN or wake on LAN. It might be worded slightly differently, so anything that sounds similar should be used.

Step 4 – Enable And Choose Your Key

Once you have found the setting, use the plus or minus key to enable the option. Next, choose your preferred key that will power your laptop. Select it, and then it’s time to save and exit using the F10 key.

Configure The Network Card

Once you have done that, you will need to configure the network card so that it knows to power the system through the keyboard! To do this, right-click on the start button.

Next, select the device manager option and wait for it to open up. Once loaded, find network adapters and right-click on the menu. From your options, select properties and scroll to the power management tab.

Tick the box that says allow this device to wake the computer. Once done, you will want to test to see if it works. Do this by shutting down your laptop. Once off, plug in the LAN to power your laptop. If it has worked, your laptop will turn on.

It’s worth noting that being able to do this option will depend on your motherboard settings.

Final Word

And there you have it, two easy ways to turn on your laptop without the power button!

Don’t forget to check your user manual or online tutorials that can help you turn your laptop on without the power button or navigate any other issues you might be having with your laptop.
